BJ’s Wholesale Club has revealed the location of four new stores slated to open in 2022, which includes a club in Warwick, RI, that will serve as an “innovation lab.”
While the retailer did not offer much in the way of specifics, the Rhode Island location will be named BJ’s Market. According to the company, this club will allow for the testing of new assortments, displays, product demonstrations and convenience initiatives.
The three other new stores will be located in Lady Lake, FL; Canton, MI; and Greenburgh, NY. Each new BJ’s Wholesale Club is expected to create approximately 150 jobs for their respective communities, and BJ’s Market will create around 50 jobs for the respective community.
“We continue to accelerate our expansion and we’re excited to open these new locations,” said Bill Werner, executive vice president, strategy and development, BJ’s Wholesale Club. “We’re always looking for ways to bring the value and convenience of a BJ’s membership to more shoppers, and extending our reach is a major way of achieving that.”
While BJ’s in its press release did not a take deep dive into the details of its innovation lab store, the notable omission from the concepts the retailer will be testing is customer checkout. The warehouse club has long been challenged to move shopper traffic through the cash registers efficiently.
While new and expanded product assortments, in-store demonstrations and displays would likely be welcomed by its members, getting them through the checkout process quickly, similar to rival Costco, would surely be a benefit appreciated by most.
Headquartered in Westborough, Massachusetts, BJ’s Wholesale Club is a leading operator of membership warehouse clubs in the Eastern United States. The company currently operates 226 clubs and 157 BJ’s Gas locations in 17 states.
